Stained Glass Tools

Choose copper foil width, backing and applicator

Compare the glass edge, the appearance through the glass and the tool that feeds the tape.

Allow tape to wrap the glass edge

Width determines how much tape is available to cover the edge and fold onto the two faces. Compare the width against the actual sheet thickness and the seam appearance you want. Check whether your applicator accepts that width.

Check the backing through the glass

Clear pieces may show the adhesive-side color from behind. Compare the black-, silver- and copper-backed variants against the appearance you want for the finished joint. Check the backing description even when two rolls have similar copper faces in photos.

Separate feeding and pressing

An applicator can guide the tape as it is applied, and a burnisher presses the tape against the piece. If you already feed tape by hand and need help only with smoothing, compare a burnishing tool. Check what is supplied before buying a bundle.

Guide questions

Can I use the same holder for two foil widths?

Check its stated slots or supported widths. A fixed-width handheld guide may fit one width, while a holder with multiple guides may support more.

What should I compare if the glass is clear?

Look at the backing as well as the width. The backing may be visible from the opposite face of the piece.

Do multiple roll listings imply multiple widths?

Read the exact pack. Two rolls can be the same width and backing, while an assortment may supply several widths.

Which accessory suits the job?

  1. These Edco listings have the same stated width but different backing and roll counts. Compare the color that may show through clear glass, then compare how much tape you are ordering.

  2. Both Edco choices have black backing. Compare 7/32 and 3/16 inch for how much foil wraps onto each face and which width your applicator supports.

  3. The Leponitt fid presses foil already placed on the work. The Driftless tabletop unit holds and guides a roll during application. Choose the tool for the step you need help with.

  4. Delphi’s foiler guides three widths from a roll on the bench. The Leponitt fid presses foil by hand after placement. Compare the tool with the step you want help with.

  5. Both packs use black backing. Innconee supplies three different widths with hand tools. Sun and Moon supplies three of the same 7/32-inch width. Choose according to whether you are comparing widths or restocking one.

  6. Both offers list 7/32-inch tape. ARTKINGTO supplies silver-backed rolls and a hand foiler. Edco supplies a black-backed roll. Check what shows through your glass and whether you already have the tool.
